What Qualifies a Piece of Furniture as Antique?

Some people find it difficult to determine what qualifies a piece of furniture as an antique. Collectors typically subdivide older furniture into antique, vintage and just old. You must know the difference between these categories to know if a piece is truly an antique.
Old furniture
Many people mistake furniture from the 1920s-1950s for antique furniture, because older designs were recycled during this period. Consult an expert to examine the piece to determine whether it is actually an antique, or an antique style revived in a more recent piece.
Vintage furniture
Collectors use the term "vintage" to describe furniture that is neither contemporary nor antique. Pieces from the 1960s and 1970s are frequently referred to as "vintage."
Antique furniture
There are several definitions of antique furniture. In general, the piece must have existed for at least 100 years. However, some antique dealers and flea markets may use the term "antique" for items at least 50 years old. Many fine antique dealers do not classify furniture as antique until it as reached 150 years of age. If you are unsure what definition a dealer is using, ask for clarification on the dealer's definition. If you are ever suspicious that a piece is not as old as the dealer claims, find a third-party expert to ask.
Collectors and dealers sometimes differ on the definition of "antique," when it comes to furniture. However, most of the time the term is reserved for pieces at least 150 years old. If you ever have questions about whether a piece is a true antique, consult an expert.
