Where can I find quality antiques for great prices in the new york, new jersey area?

I am moving back to New York from abroad and need to furnish my apartment from top to bottom. I have a tight budget but love antiques. I was wondering if anyone knows where to get beautiful things for great prices... Thanks!!

1. go to yard sales people sell thing they do not know what they are worth

There are some excellent Thrift stores and second hand stores in NYC and in NJ, Unfortunately, I have not been back in a little while so I am not sure where anymore as everyone knows the city changes often. Most antique dealers snatch up most of the really good things now days and it is very rare to find something that someone doesn't know what they have. The Antiques Roadshow ruined it for all of us! Other than antiques all I can say is IKEA! They have some really nice fakes! So do Target and T.J. Maxx. The fakes are getting better all the time. Start off with some little pieces from a dealer and highlight them in the room with some carefully placed lighting. Japanese and chinese things are easier to get as an unknown bargain because most people can't read chinese so your chances are better of actually getting something good for less money. I deal in mostly asian things for that reason... They are usually the only things left that you can get on the cheap... How about a Kimono? Beautiful hung on the wall and some of them are really cheap! www.Chuu.com I'm jealous... I wish I could go back too. But I wish you luck and have a little happiness for me too. I love NY and I miss it terribly. Boo-hoo... *smiles...
3. You will usually pay top prices when you visit antique dealers. Best advice is to look at classified ads in the newspaper, visit flea markets or yard sales, and attend estate auctions. Estate auctions usually have all of the everyday items you need to set up housekeeping at incredibly low prices. Antiques might be another story. While it can be worthwhile buying antiques at estate auctions, you will probably face bidding competition from collectors and dealer. Many auction businesses post lots of pictures and descriptions of the contents of upcoming auctions on their websites. This can save you a lot of legwork. The only drawback to auctions is the time spent waiting around for the items you are interested in to come up for bid. Good luck and welcome home.
4. Try Tepper Auctions every other Saturday on 25th St. and Park Ave. South. Also, Doyle Auction on 87th and 3rd. usually on Wed. afternoons. There is also a great wholesale place out in Moonachie NJ called ARK Antiques (near Giant's Stadium and Teterboro Airport. Happy Hunting
