question on antiques?
We have emptied my fathers storage unit and believe there are some antiques. How do we determine whether or not these pieces of furniture and worth anything or not.

- You would need to contact an appraiser if you feel there is something of true value. You will have to pay for the appraisal, that's why I say be sure there is something of value that you plan to sell if the price is right. It's an expensiive step if you are just curious about the value. If the things are going to be split up among several people, I'd let each one make that decision. As for the estate, if an appraisal is necessary to auction off the items, then an appraiser will be paid through the auction firm handling the sell.
- Well the best way is by appraisal. But if your short on cash you can always look for details..name of company any distinquishing charactersistics...take photos of all sides of the furniture and post online in certain forums. Also take pics to close antique stores etc..compare to similar items and ask questions. Your best bet is online you can always find tons of info on the net. Just be careful some people will give you overestimates on pieces..making you think they are worth more than they are. Try link listed in sources and good luck to you.
- =an appraiser is a good idea, but you could also contact a couple of antique dealers or auctioneers and probably will not have to pay them. Compare deals and may the higher bidder win. Just think twice if you really don't need the money, why not keep your fathers stuff and keep it inn the family for generations to come so they could enjoy the pieces and maybe benefit from it if they had to sell in the future.
