Have you ever had an antique/collectible appraiser come to your home?
Have heard they can cost around $200, do a walk-through and you should have everything out to see. I don't really know where to start in picking one, except the phone book. I also know that if they offer to buy anything, they should be told to leave, and that this is unethical. I love details--Thanks!! ;-)

- Call your Insurace agent..He can recommend a trustworthy appraiser..people usually get things appraised for Insurance purposes and your agent will be able to help you in finding a good one.
- If you need it for insurance reasons, I go with what the other answer says about contacting your insurance guy. If you want to sell your items, really, I don't think an appraiser anymore does that much good. To me, that is kind of a waste of money, unless you know firsthand they are reputable and good. Really, the online marketplace has changed the face of antique and collectibles so much, that doing your own online searches and getting up to the minute pricing is the way to go.
- Contact some one that sells that type of stuff and put in an auction. Put a reserve bid on items you feel are big $ Do not sell to this person unless you know the value of them. If youcall an auctioneer to look at it they may not charge you to look. If you sell through them! Details are great...protect your self!!!
- I need one too, but won't go to the expense of hiring one. You can check on EBay and see what the similar items are selling for. Go to Antique stores and see what similar items are selling for. Photograph all your really valuable stuff, even the modern stuff. Put this info in both hard copy and on CD with pertainent info. On the modern stuff, say a sofa you just bought for $1000, the insurance if any thing should happen to it would be as "used" furniture and pay like $100!! The same for antiques like my dining table! Unless you get good insurance rider it is used furniture!! If you photograph each wall in a room, then do close up of the individual items, it helps a lot to prove you actually had the items if anything nasty happened to your house.
