Why are we still using the antiquated system of income rather than a true fair tax on sales? Income taxes punish the labor force for earning wages. A true fair tax is one striclty based on expendatures. Regardless of how you obtain your money, you are taxed at the time you spend it. Then, if your purchasing a big ticket item, you pay more tax than a less expensive model. This is not rocket science. Any red neck can see it is a better way to conduct business. Why can our educated leaders not?
Which is more appropriate: magician or someone who has learned how to do a few cool things? Is the term " magician" antiquated. For the longest time, Penn and Teller refered to themselves as a couple of guys who learned to do a few cool things. They hated the term illusionist! Their whole act is built upon respect for the audiences intelligence. Who else in magic circles does this? Is it time we just dropped the guy/girl in a top hat who seems to violate the laws of physics and just go with cool! You might have very good results advertising yourself as some Uber Con Man! (Which is what P&T do in their promotions a lot). I don't know. I do like the new approach they've pioneered!
Whats the story behind undergravel filtration for saltwater aquariums? Is undergravel filtration antiquated and not worth messing with? I have been told that it is a lot of trouble to clean and other devices will work better. Can undergravel filtration be used with other devices(a power filter) and if so how effitive is it? Could undergravel filtration + power filter take the place of a good protein skimmer? I want to have either an all fish(hawkfish + 1 or two other fishes) or fish + invertabrete(shrimp/goby and two other fish, maybe a butterfly or tang).
How to deal with a co-worker? I'm a teacher and I'm having difficulty with a co-worker. Her teaching methods are antiquated and she is constantly pointing out the faults of my special needs students. All of this singling out has made the other children not want to interact with my two students. They are often quite mean to them. I've spoken to her, her principal, and other staff members on how to better engage the children. I'm trying to take a positive and proactive plan by modeling appropriate behavior, highlighting her strengths, giving her input on our behavioral interventions, etc. I've even arranged to get her a classroom assistant. She is just a control freak. I've been teaching for 15 years and have NEVER met such a rigid person. She is causing a great deal of conflict with the children's parents as well. No one can get through to her..not even her principal. She has tenure so her job security is safe. Any suggestions or advice on how to improve this situations, not for me but for the kids!
Why do we expect our First Ladies to espouse antiquated notions of what a "wife" is? The biggest criticism of Hillary Clinton when she was First Lady was the fact that she expressed her opinion. (It wasn't said that politely, but you get the idea.) So my question is, why shouldn't she? In the 21st century, long after the Women's Movement is supposed to have been successful, why do we expect our First Ladies to be nothing more than arm decorations for the President? Why SHOULDN'T they work for the better of the nation? (And even if you disagree that that's what Hillary did... SHE believed she was working for the better of the nation... so why shouldn't she be allowed to?) Pythagoras: It's my understanding that the President has the right to consult whomever he wishes to advise him on matters of state. You don't have to approve of that being his wife, but he has the right to keep her as involved as he wishes.
Why does Obama and McCain support nuclear energy? We had so many groups in the 60s and 70s that battled against a great increase in nuclear power plants and they were successful! Instead of renewable energy sources such as wind and the sun, why are these two major party candidates talking about an antiquated energy source that results in radioactive byproducts. Definitely not good for the environment. This is the much better option: Wind Powers 40% Of Spain http://www.metaefficient.com/news/new-record-wind-powers-40-of-spain.html
Should the Sharpe theme tune replace current national anthem of England? You have to admit that the current the English national anthem is somewhat antiquated; and a song about a monarchy in a society that preaches democracy is blatant hypocracy. So would the Sharpe theme make a good alternative? Have a listen and decide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Odqg6_k5E8
please help I keep getting the blue screen of death and my computer wont start up at all? I have windows 98 SE (antiquated I know) With starting up whether it is safe mode or normal mode I keep getting a blue screen with registry checker on it then it goes onto another screen with 'you have a good restored registry' press enter to continue. when I press enter the computer restarts then goes through this whole process again. My question is is there any way I can bypass the registry so I can get the files I want (namely photos) before I throw my @#$@$ computer out and get a new one??
hey guys can someone write an essay based on the information is given? hey you guys these are some of the answers that are given to this question ;what are the effect if any does the political; structure have on families in our society? can some one develop all this information into an essay. here is the information or opinions that people had given. I think there are many ways in which the political structure affects families. Some are beneficial and others are detrimental. Of the good kind, one sees persons settled in a society where law and order prevail, which gives a sense of security to those who abide by it. On the other hand, there is probably too much governmental interference in the way people choose to live. High taxation, antiquated laws, lack of sufficient health care, a stressed economy, unemployment rates, escalating crime, relaxed national security, and domestic violence are some of the by-products of the division of politics in this nation. Where one side will preach conservatism, the opposing faction will expound on liberalism.
Should we re-write or rescind the Geneva Convention? Because "The War on Terror" is not a traditional war, antiquated methods of fighting are obviously not very effective. The Geneva Convention is good in alot of ways but very limiting for the current "war" we are fighting. I purpose that since the Geneva Convention is not being upheld by Muslim militants when engaging our military, it is usless to maintain. Why fight with your hands tied behind your back? Knowing that we are unable to engage hospitals, mosques, ambulances and civilians they are hiding behind each of these. They are not fighting "by the rules" why should we continue to give them an upper hand? By simply withdrawing from the Geneva convention, and any other global network that causes us to be held back we wouldn't have to worry about breaking their rules. Each and every soldier would have the freedom to use their own sense of when and where it is necessary to eliminate our enemies. Morality is indeed very important we should form our own rules. What do you think?

Would a better name for Hillary and the new "progressives" actually be REGRESSIVE? Bill and Hillary Clinton, when running in 1992, were fond of repeating the old saying that insanity is defined by doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting a different outcome. They were prescient (and I'm not just talking about Hillary's recycled healthcare plan). No matter how they label themselves, the Progressives are anything but: on every issue that affects Americans, they have staked their politics and theories that are antiquated, ineffective or redundant. And if that's not crazy, I don't know what is. 1. We saw how well it went went the hippy liberals opposed the Vietnam War (Iraq) 2. Progressives believe if we give in - a lasting PEACE will take root. Nothing could be further from the truth. (Hitler / Nevil Chamberlain) The "progressives" want want us to do everything that Bin Laden and his minions advise: withdraw from Iraq, jettison Israel, and remove any Western presence from Saudi Arabia. We cannot bow to evil. 3. Race Relations - To Progressives, something like the Jena 6 is a beautiful thing, because it proves their point -- America is a racist nation, and they can board their protest busses and bravely take a seat at the segregated lunch counters of their fantasies.
Which Navies are more combat ready? I know the US navy is the largest and spends more on it's Navy it's unfair to compare it with other navies. France navy is better than the English navy in regards to modernization and nuclear capability. The Russian Navy is old and antiquated although current retrofits are in the works Spain's naval Armada is quite capable of a sustained campaign against any other country that do not form the above list plus it has the worlds oldest marine corps, Europe is keeping a keen eye on Spain since we know what they do when they are strong, the US also restricts Spain to this day. Italy's Navy sucks due to political ineffectiveness. Japans Navy needs permission from the US as well for rebuilding and if this happens it would immediately posses position no. 2
Physio Dog Lab: did this really help us in surgery/clinical practice? Do you guys remember the dreadful Beagle experiment we had to do in physio? It involved a series of cannulations via a femoral cut down, creating a pericardial basket, administrating various agents and monitoring the cardiovascular response, and finally we had to euthanize the poor animal via direct direct infusion of KCl into the LV... Well, I felt that since I was going into surgery, it would behoove me to participate in this lab, despite how averse I was to doing this. In retrospect, I learned very little by participating in this antiquated and in my opinion, barbaric, procedure and it did not make me a better surgeon/clinician in any way. Do you practicing MDs agree, or am I in the minority on this? Thank you folks, I was just curious how other physicians felt. I am a huge animal lover and have a lot of misgivings that my profession involves the use of such wonderful animals as a surrogate for the sick/injured patient. To the credit of Anesthesiology, this specialty has gone to great lengths to advance resident learning using technologically sophisticated computerized simulation models for which many critical scenarios can be replicated.
Police Officers -What are the rules of Criminal Procedure in your state? I am a police officer in PA. Misdemenor and Felony arrests can be made in three ways: 1) arrest without a warrant 2) arrest with a warrant 3) filing charges Any on view crime, probable cause of a felony, and certain specific statutes (DUI, domestic violence, etc.) can result in an arrest without a warrant. Other charges require requesting a warrant or simply filing charges (chages are mailed to defendant with a court order to appear in court). After an arrest has been made, the defendant has a right to a preliminary hearing. At this hearing the state must prove a prima facia case (on the face of it, there is enough evidnce to proceed to county court). After the preliminary hearing, the officical court process begins. How do things in your state work? I'm curious to learn the differences. Preliminary hearings in PA seem to be to be antiquated. They are held whether or not he defendant is in custody. I am looking for a better model out there...
Why is it when born again christians preach they never mention prayer to the Virgin holy Mary? I was born catholic, I was told to pray to Mother Mary and pray the rosary. I believe the children from Fatima and what Mother Mary said to Lucia about having the world pray to her for help in world peace. I guess I consider myself a reborn christian now. As much as I respect the church , some of their rules are kind of antiquated for the times. Of course this is my opinion, I am not trying to convert anyone, but If there is anyone out there who is a reborn christian can you help me with this question? I listen to DR. CHARLES STANLEY, JOEL OSTEEN AND JOYCE MEYERS. I get a better understanding of the bible when I listen to them and I feel more motivated to continue in a Christian life. But, I never hear any of them speak of the Virgin Mary. I am really surprise that Joyce Meyers doesn't speak on the subject. She seems to be a feminist. Can anyone help me here? thank you in advance, from borderline or boordrline@verizon.net
Who Has The Better 10 Commandments, Me or God? Here are 10 rules to live by: Don't murder-- kill only in self-defense; use violence only in self-defense, or in defense of others, or in defense of your country. Don't steal-- don't take what you know doesn't belong to you, unless not doing so places your life or your loved ones in jeopardy. Don't rape-- no means no. Don't mistreat people because of their skin color, nationality, sex, sexual orientation, or beliefs. Don't abuse, mistreat, neglect or molest children, for any reason. Don't abuse your spouse, (wife or husband). Don't willfully cause harm to others, either verbally or physically. Don't infringe or undermine the rights and freedoms of others. Don't enslave other humans. Don't destroy our earth, either for ourselves or the animals that inhabit it. Don't you think these are much better and relevant to your life than the antiquated ten commandments in the Bible found in Exodus 20:2-17?
I have an idea for how I feel middle and high school should be (Hogwarts inspired). Please, what do you think. Very often I am told I would make a good teacher. I love being around kids and youth and feel an instinctive compulsion to avail them of all the knowledge I possess. I understand what other people see when they look at me in the company of my younger fellow human beings, a bright eyed, energetic, engaging young man who talks to his younger kin with excitement, interest and respect. I understand because that is exactly how I feel. I see my younger self when I look at young ones and I feel the sympathetic eagerness and zeal that pulsed ever so strongly in me during my childhood and youth. Now, as an adult, I want to be the man who inspires youth, the man who I wish had been there to inspire me. An adult brimming over with vitality and vigour and zest for life. YEAGH!!! sigh. if only i could be that way in our current education system...a monolith of stagnancy and antiquated notions of humans needing an environment of didactic discipline and regulation to enable any sort of productivity. I got to my 3rd year of University and looked forward to my likely career as an English teacher in middle and high school and thought : "No. No, I will not touch this current education system with a 5 zillion meter pole. Never." All I need do is think about my own experience going to school, day after day of being forced out of bed by my alarm clock, looking forward to learning nothing, any hope I once harbored of actually learning snuffed out long ago. In retrospect, the thought that constantly rushes to the surface when I think of school is (and my apologies for being so horribly blunt) "I Hate School." School to me was torture. Something imposed on me by adults. Something adults bullied me into doing. Something I had to do and if I didn't I would be punished by never getting a good job and being one of our society's degenerates worthy of nothing but pity and disgust. School was painted in colors of sadness and grey for me... well... now I'm an adult, and I say, "That-Is-Enough." Sorry for all the painful confession, but, if you're still reading, I think it prepares the ambience for my revolutionary idea quite nicely. And without further ado, here it is : School The Student-Directed Research Facility. No longer : The Adult-Dictated Indoctrination Factory. One is about empowering students to become : 1. FULFILLED 2. CONFIDENT 3. EAGER adults. The other creates the zombies of fear and self-consciousness that are sadly you and I (if you are an adult reading this.) (If you're a kid. Lucky You! I'm going to do my best to change school into a place you'll LOVE to go to. Just keep exploring life. It will happen soon.) Why change the school system though? Isn't it just fine the way it is? Let's think about that for 5 seconds...uh : no. Here's a simple test, give any adult one of their old middle school or high school tests in any subject which they do not use in their daily life. I seriously doubt ANY of them would pass. "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?" is just a fun show right? I think it actually does a really good job of pointing out how meaningless and devoid of purpose our current approach to education really is. "Memorize as much stuff as you can, puke it up on a test, and be labeled with a letter declaring how much the adults approve of your worthiness to continue to exist." Ah. Only a C? Boy. You're only marginally worthy of continuing to exist. Better improve. ~_~ Can we say totally lame? Our current education system follows this pattern : "Memorization." "Regurgitation." "Oblivion." Memorize a bunch of stuff for a test. Throw it up on a test. Take a sigh of relief (the same kind you take after using the toilet) and try to forget the whole horrible ordeal. Contemplating this as an adult I can only shake my head in dismay. sigh. Well...we did use to think the Earth was round...and condemned Galileo for claiming the Sun did not revolve around the Earth...and Ignaz Semmelweis for insisting that surgeons wash their hands before operating. Well, adults are still human after all. I figure that stuff children don't like in their childhood become the things they fix when they become adults. 12 years old. Coming of age. I am absolutely, 100% certain, that at 12 years of age, all children are ready. Ready for what? Ready to seek out their purpose in life. Imagine this : You're 12 years old and you are starting your first day of school as a middle school student. You arrive at school and all the other kids are gathered there at the entrance watching as the Principal ascends a stage and begins their inaugural address. He/She says, "Welcome Students!" "Congratulations! You are now in Middle School! Now begins your quest to discover who you are, your quest to define yourself by the way you investigate and express your existence. Now YOU are in charge of your education." "We adults have built this school FOR YOU. It has libraries, computer labs, carpenter shops, mechanic shops, kitchens, gyms, fields, stages, recording studios, and lots and lots of classrooms (with actually comfortable chairs). As you can see, we have filled it with facilities for you to use as you see fit in your exploration of life and the development of your unique personality. Express yourself as you see fit. If you want to do Math problems all day. Please do. If you want to read Shakespeare plays all day. By all means. If you want to spend the entire day practising your jump shot. Good for you. If you want to just bake cookies and enjoy that delicious smell for the duration of the day, I would only ask that you bring a few to your old principal. You, all of you, ARE OUR FUTURE. You are the next generation of humanity. This world. This planet. This Earth we call home will be yours to explore, guide and cherish. Our committment to you as adults is to MAKE YOU STRONG. We want you, all of you, to become strong, confident, and happy. Healthy. Happy. Fulfilled Human Beings are Peaceful Human Beings. Be healthy. Be happy. Be fulfilled." "We teachers will always be there for you. Will be out and about the hallways and classrooms and facilities, doing much the same thing you will be doing. We are adults, but there is so much to learn and do, the quest of exploring life never ends. Still, we have been around a few more years than you younglings and know a thing or two which we are eager and delighted to share with you. All of you will be receiving an 'Agenda' and you will be able to set up appointments with teachers whom you wish to have a chat with. When you are working on a personal project, just set up an appointment with a teacher and they will help guide you. In Middle School (and later on in High School) teachers are guides for you to seek out when you need them, but, you are the arrow now. Aim at what absorbs your interest." "We teachers will always be there for you. Will be out and about the hallways and classrooms and facilities, doing much the same thing you will be doing. We are adults, but there is so much to learn and do, the quest of exploring life never ends. "All students will now accompany their designated teachers to take a tour of the school and familiarize yourselves with the facilities. You will then go to classrooms and be taught how to make your appointments with teachers. The rest of the day (and, indeed, everyday hereafter for the duration of your schooling) is yours to do with as you see fit. Use the time to find yourself and your passion. Oh yes, the cafeteria serves truly excellent meals to appeal to every taste. Don't forget that inquiring minds require excellent fuel. If I may suggest, research the vitamin and mineral requirements for the human body and the foods which best fulfill them. You would be simply amazed how fresh fruit juice in the morning livens the senses. Oh, and please do seek me out to talk to me. I love this school and all of you students are already dear to me. I look forward tremendously to hearing about everything you are doing. Well now. Off you go." sniff. I so wish school had been like that...sigh. Well, nothing for it though but to make it happen for the next generation. And that's what I'm going to do. Oh, and if the speech of the principal sounds like something Dumbledore would have given, that's because I am a deep fan of Harry Potter and, most excellently, so are the majority of the children on the face of the Earth. J.K Rowling has truly prepared the groundwork for a generation of children who have been given a vision of schooling where children actually "learn" to do something exciting, to finish school and be possessed of countless amazing abilities. It is only natural for any child to ask, "And why can't real school be like that?" You know what kids, I don't see any reason why it can't. None at all. P.S : I know. I double posted my "Aim at what absorbs your interest" part of the speech. It's late and I'm tired but I'm also hungry for feedback on my idea, so I'm making this last post. If you've read this far, WOW!, and thanks. : ) <<<Replies>>> Thanks for all your responses everyone! I'll now respond to each of them. <<<xollinzo>>> Fascinating name my young friend. "I dream of going to a school based on the principle of Hogwarts. Please make my dream a reality. : )" sniff. You bet I will. Count on it. : ) "Colleges like Hogwarts". hmm...I don't know. Actually, my approach to schooling isn't quite like Hogwarts exactly. What my approach has is the truth that kids graduate school with amazing abilities. What's different is that the kids CHOOSE for themselves. It's all up to them. Adults guide, but do not preach. Kids follow their hearts and minds on their journey to learn and become strong. Not quite Hogwarts, but, it's the desire to make kids strong that Dumbledore had in his heart and I have in mine that the two schools share. That's really all that's needed. : ) <<<bookworm>>> "I am in awe of your idea." sniff. : ' ) Thanks. I like it too. I wish I'd been around to make school like this when I was young. Something I decided, that pulled me out of the abyss of purposelessness and depression I was stuck in during my early 20's was this : "I am going to make the world into the place I needed it to be when I was young, so I could have grown into the person of limitless potential I knew I could have become." I'm doing this for all the kids of the world, but, especially for the kid I once was. "I don't even remember what I learned last week in History!" Of course you don't. Why should you? Why is it relevant? It's not, until YOU FEEL it is. Adults have the crazy idea that force-feeding tons of data into your head is education. As Dumbledore would say, "Rubbish." "For heavens sake half the things I learn about I don't even care about!" It's ridiculous isn't it. Would be nice to just blast this silliness away like an annoying Bogart wouldn't it? sigh. "I believe that all children would become better adults and more accomplished and specialized if you used your idea." Yup! They would! Why? People learn when they are connected to their learning. When it is IMPORTANT TO THEM. Man. It's so basic. Why has it taken so long for somebody to point it out. Fear. My Grandpa was outspoken too. My Mom was terrified the State Police back in Spain in the 60's would take him away for speaking his mind. FEAR. You and I don't understand it, but, our parents and our grandparents knew it as their reality. Well. They fought hard to try to make some peace for us. WE GOT TO USE IT! "Bravo to you I support you and your idea full-heartedly!" yeagh...you pump me up. I'm a Sagittarius. I thrive off of passion. It fires me up. Thanks. I can feel the fire burning inside of me. I love it. Count on me. Kids deserve a happy world, and I'm going to give it to them. Believe It! <<<stephanie>>> Oops. Forgiveness please. Being vociferous is as much a part of me as my right hand. When I was kid, the doctors tried to drug my excitability out of me with Ritalin, but, thank god, they didn't succeed in making me a complacent zombie like they wanted to. Being succinct isn't my thing. That's why it's so great the world has all kinds of people. We compliment each other. Plants need Rain and Sun to grow. Humanity needs Passion (me) and Rationality (you maybe) to grow. I can't be ice when I'm fire, but, I know the world needs both to thrive. Maybe, you want to join my Yahoo Group, and help offer the rationality I don't have much of. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheVeljaApproach/ Thanks for the succinct reply anyways! <<<tepishan>>> "I would like you to be my English teacher!" When the school I envision is reality, I can't think of anything I'd rather do! As school is now, I would be betraying myself and betraying you young people. I want to teach you, not preach to you. YOU KNOW WHAT'S BEST FOR YOU ALREADY. not me. I want YOU to TELL ME what you want to learn, and I will guide you. Being young is about energy. Being old is about guiding that energy. The problem is most adults still haven't satisfied their inner child yet. They don't FEEL like adults. They feel like kids trapped screaming and crying in adult bodies. sniff. : ' ( it's really quite cruel... well. nothing for it, but for me to fix it. : ) "Yes, we do need teachers like you. I hate to say it but the quality of education nowadays is not good anymore." Of course not. Teachers are wage slaves. They teach to buy food and have shelter. That's no reason to teach. That's no reason to live either. Hence most adults having the vitality of zombies, drinking, drugging and watching tv to suppress the sad children they have locked inside of them. No wonder I have few adult friends. I'm totally honest, and it hurts me. It must hurt them even more. I'm just so frustrated, I can't hold it in. That's why I'm doing something about it. "I live in the Philippines..." Wow. Your English is awesome. Most impressive! My empathy for your poor teacher. Again, pity the poor adults around you. They went through the awfulness of schooling your experiencing right now. That they act like dazed and confused is no wonder. Don't lose your spark! I'll fix this as soon as I can. Interjection : I'd love for you to join my Yahoo Group. I need the energy and spark of young people like you. I need to keep being reminded why I have this insatiable drive to fix the school system. You help me tons! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheVeljaApproach/ "I hate to say it but our education system here doesn't work...They even hurt us occasionally." ...i'm sorry. My Dad had a ruler struck between his nails when he didn't do well in school back in Taiwan. Disgusting. But, then again, we used to stone people to death, burn people at the stake, hang people, stick people in pits with starving animals, etc. etc. Human beings can be...horrible creatures. But. That's because THEY'RE NOT HAPPY! duh! My school system will fix that. : ) "If possible, I want a young teacher...full of new ideas...and can socialize very well." Yup. That's me. But I'm not interested in just being one poor teacher trying his best in a system designed to strip kids of all their hope and dreams. NO WAY IN *^%&! In my system, teachers spend a lot of their time growing themselves. They follow their own projects, just like the kids follow theirs. Whenever kids need guidance or advice, teachers are there. But, when the kids are cruising along at their own speed and with brave confidence, the teachers just watch and smile and work on their own ideas. ah. Beautiful. "Discipline...No way!" Right on. Discipline is what adults need because they know they can't be themselves or they'll be punished. Again, our history is a sad and violent one of oppression and fear. Time to change that I'd say. "We don't tolerate the teacher's strictness. Instead we annoy her until she cries or walks out of the classroom." oh dear... of course you kids act that way. WHAT A SICK SYSTEM MAN! Pitting teachers and students against each other. Disgusting! sigh. Caesars are still guiding our school system. Delighting in the brutality of the colosseum. Poor people... In my system, students and teachers are equal. Partners. Friends. Family. On the quest for knowledge. "We respect the teachers that understand us." Of course. "Sadly those teachers are often discriminated." Sadly, of course. Fear my young friend. It's what the adults around you live with everyday, like a choking blackness pressing down on their heart and squeezing out their will to live. Don't let it squish you. Be a bright light. I'm going to make it so you can shine. Count on it. "I really like your idea. I want to be a writer...I hate Math and History, science and computer, but I like English, Arts, Physical Education and Music." "I want to choose my classes. I want to be free from all those nonsense that the teachers speak of." Ah. You're like me. Passionate artist. Sagittarius maybe? I feel your frustration. Don't choke it down. That's the mistake most adults make. Feel it. Know it. Be aware of it. And aim to do something about it for yourself. "I'll get the chance in college." Yes you will. : ) But, I'm going to make sure other kids don't have to wait so long. Awesome response! YOU ROCK! <<<Alice K>>> Ah. Adult views. Excellent. Exactly what I'm going to hear. Here we go: BELIEVE!!!!!!!! Alice, my friend, we adults have to believe in our kids. We have to tell them that we need them to become strong because this world is theirs next and we want them to be happy and to guide and cherish this planet we are custodian of. Give the kids their purpoe, their need to become strong and they will show us just how much potential they have! WE HAVE TO BELIEVE IN THEM! I know. I know. It wasn't like that for us. , _ , it really sucks...but, we have to fix it for the kids now. If we believe in kids, they will BLOW OUR MINDS! Believe It! <<<Amanda M>>> "Every child and even some adults need to learn to read and cipher. You cannot live in this world if you do not." Well...yeagh, of course. "Keep in mind to open their eyes to other things in life beyond what they would like to do." Nope. We adults DO NOT OPEN THEIR EYES. We guide them. The kids open their own eyes, when they want to. Human beings are instinctively curious. If a cool chemistry teacher is working on a project of his own in the Chem lab and it looks cool, a bunch of curious kids will gather around and ask tons of questions, and ta-dah, let the learning commence. So simple. : ) "Give them a chance to voice their opinion and of course find ways to make them enjoy their subjects more." I like what you say, but I think the degree of change you seek is far too modest. No. Adults have NO SAY in what the kids learn. They choose. SCHOOL IS ALL ABOUT THE STUDENT. all about. All we need to do is believe in them. that's it. "You may be surprised how they would like to go to school rather then dread it." We both want the same thing. Excellent. Let's do it. Join my group please. I WANT your feedback. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheVeljaApproach/ <<<dan the man>>> "nice and all but heavily flawed. i'll try to hit on most of your points." Thanks dude! Let's go! "incredibly expensive." nope. We use existing school facilities. Nothing changes, except the approach to schooling. that's it. "good nutritious food costs a hell of a lot more than spaghetti and hot dogs." and costs a lot more in health care bills when adults have heart attacks at 40. Our society has to stop thinking small and start thinking BIG. long term. no more of this paroquial vision. it's lame. "nice comfortable chairs cost a hell of a lot more than plastic ones." and cost the health care system ludicrous amounts in back injuries later on. "mechanic workshops and kitchens. are you kidding. do you want a 12 year old running around operating buzz saws and 400 degree ovens. yeagh some 12 year olds would be capable...but a lot would be injured." Gotta believe in the kids my friend. They're human. They're smart. They have no intention of cutting off limbs or burning off skin. This school is ALL ABOUT THEM. No pressure. No time restraints. There are teachers to guide them. Naturally basic safety will be in place. Tools locked up. Same as on a job site. Kids have to be trained how to use tools. Same as adults. At 12 years of age, kids are SO capable of doing anything adults can do. Have we human beings devolved from the middle ages because kids we're doing apprenticeships at 12 years of age then. Why are we so different now? Answer : we're not. "if you want to spend the day doing jump shots...come graduation day you would likely end up with at least 90 percent of the students completely useless in society except for a better than average cooking and basketball ability." ah my friend. You and I are such products of adults having no belief in us whatsoever. We have had to fight for everything. Sucks hasn't it? Not having adults believe in you. Lame. Kids want to grow. They want to be strong! Of course they're not going to just shoot hoops and bake cookies! They look at the world around them and see where they can help. Where they can make a difference and train themselves for that. HUMAN BEINGS HAVE AN INTRINSIC NEED TO FEEL SPECIAL, TO FEEL USEFUL, TO FEEL NEEDED! Kids know they need to have broad ranging skills. deep skills. Believe in them man. They'll surprise our socks off. "i'm glad you are all harry potter crazy but its just a fiction story..." yeagh...so was "40,000 Leagues Under The Sea". "Around The World In 80 Days." "From The Earth To The Moon." and "Mein Kampf" Fiction is only fiction until we make it reality. "the purpose of most school...is to prepare you for next year...prepare you for high school...prepare you for college...dealing with a job or more complex education where there will be learning everything for your future job." sounds pretty tedious to me and frickin boring. No wonder it's completely normal in our society for us to expect kids not to want to go to school, or adults not to want to go to work. With such a pedantic system in place, who would want to get out of bed in the morning? I'm getting pretty tired, but, I want to continue this line of discussion my friend. If you think I've got something and want to help, critiquing is help, trust me, join my group! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheVeljaApproach/ "it would be great for your idea for the students, but they would all be, more than likely, rejected by every college cause none would get the complete broad spectrum education they deserved." Believe my friend! If a kid wants to go to college, THEY WILL SEEK OUT what they need to get there. If cars are their thing, why force Chemistry on them? You're just wasting their time when they could be learning how to disassemble the exhaust manifold. "those people you see on are you smarter than a 5th grader aren't all stupid..why would a sales manager need to know what started the civil war?" and...BINGO!!! they don't. "why would a kid need to know it? so they can understand that part of the war and prepare themselves for future history lessons." So they need to understand it so they can pass future history lessons. yuck. Satisfy a system, not a person. gross. The reason to learn history is because you FEEL it resonate inside of you, not because you have to get a good grade to placate the adult overseers. That's slavery. "in all honesty i would love to know how old you are, how far you went in your education, and your job now cause i doubt you didn't do well in any of them without realizing how much the previous years have helped you get to where you are." 28. 3rd year university/ English major. Carpenter's Apprentice / 1st year. What reflection on my previous years tells me is : I was forced for my whole childhood and youth to do what I was not interested in because some system told the adults to do so. I tried to get excited about life, about the future, but I couldn't because I wasn't free. I was a slave to a system, and I could feel the fetters on my hands and wrists. I have to work now to live, and it's good, honest work, but, is it my dreams. No. My dreams are FREEDOM. The freedom to choose. I want to give that to the kids now. I wish I'd had it. So, I'm giving it to the memory of the kid I was who needed a person like me to make a school system that was about the student. ALL ABOUT THE STUDENT. I like you my friend. You wrote a lot. You challenged me. Join my group and give me a hand. At 21 you got 7 years on me more to live and help make this world one where the kids are AWESOME. We just got to believe in them. That's it. ...just like we needed to be believed in...remember that. <<<Kittie_>>> "very nice theory...however, not a full-proof system." Cool. Engage me! "Not everyone has strong interests..." Oops. Believe. Gotta Believe. The glass IS half-full, not half-empty. Just a small shift in perception, that moves the universe. "I would have performed poorly..." Says who? Don't listen to them. They suck eggs! You would have surprised yourself and everyone around you because you would be doing what your heart and mind told you to do. Every light is a special light. Whether it is silver, gold, bright, or soft. Every light contributes to the brilliance of the night sky. Believe It! "having people sample different areas is fine, but some fundamental experience in all subjects is necessary for well-rounded students." 12 years of age. All the fundamentals are there. "The math genius wouldn't cook for himself...I think there would be huge unforseeable social implications..." Why should the math genius cook? If he's hungry, he can go to the cafeteria or ask if he could have some cookies. The student baking cookies could say yes or no. Probably yes. It's nice to have your baking appreciated. : ) "Education is an institution, it doesn't always function the way it's supposed to. They're less about education, and more about meeting deadlines and learning social behavior." Sounds pretty inhuman to me. Treating kids like product on the factory assembly line at Ford. lame. "Prisons are supposed to rehabilitate..." Yeagh. Prisons are genius. Lock people up. Don't try to understand them. Where they're coming from. Just punish them and threaten more punishment unless they obey you. Wow. How nicely Dictator and Executioner like. Stalin, Hitler, Napoleon, Genghis Khan. They're all nodding their heads going, "Yup. Humans need whips to move. The dogs." ...I don't like dictators. or bullies. they suck. "If you are serious...take classes...familiarize...revise..." delays. delays. sorry. not my style. I'm impetuous and fiery. That's who I am. I would appreciate a cooler head though. Your feedback would be awesome. Join my group? http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheVeljaApproach/ "It's impossible to make it work for everybody...this isn't utopia." Who wants utopia? Sounds boring. I want challenge and adventure and risk. That's living. "I think it's great you have this idea, but it should be a springboard to a more practical solution." Thank You! Practical isn't my thing either. A year of depression and contemplating suicide made me realize that I either be myself, or don't be. Our society forces us to be perversions of ourselves. Unnatural. I can't be practical. It's not who I am. I tried and it drove me nuts. Doctors tried drugging me. I broke out in rashes. We have to STOP forcing round pieces into square boxes. We have to stop all this fear. It's killing us. The kids need us to believe in them. I'm not perfect, but I got passion! I'm going to do everything I can for the kids. I'd appreciate your help. You sound more balanced and practical. Give me your thoughts and your energy. I'd be ever so grateful for it. Thanks. <<<Conclusion>>> Whew...I'm pooped. I'll need to recover a day or two and drink a lot of fresh fruit juice and eat a lot of tofu to get my energy back up. But it was worth it. SO WORTH IT! Thanks everyone for your excellent responses! YOU ALL ROCK! If you like the idea, please join the group and feed my need to change school into something kids JUMP out of bed with JOY to go to! I got the fire, but I need fuel. Give me a hand and LET'S DO THIS! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheVeljaApproach/ Dave. ; )
Who has seen "Meet the Spartans" & "Superhero Movie"? I've enjoyed reading the neg. reviews on RottenTomatoes.com & iMDB.com for both films, perhaps preferable then actually shelling out a few dollars & watching 'em in theaters. Did u watch both films in theaters? Which one was better (or worse?) I also herd that "Superhero Movie" is leaner on the pop-culture shoutouts than the other one but mainly lampoons "Spiderman," a movie so antiquated that I already saw it on Telefutura.
Does anyone have views on the traditional roles in a marriage? What are mens view on the Love, Honor and OBEY issue in a marriage? My Husband and I have a very traditional marriage, he is the head of the household and i am his Help-meet. I know it may seem antiquated, but our marriage is very fulfilling. He takes on financial needs, and protection of the family. I care for the children, our home and my husband. I make sure I budget wisely and all of my desisions are made based on the needs of my husband first and making his life easier, and vice versa for him. I find it wonderful to know that my husband finds his family so precious that he wants to care for us, and he is quite content to know that I am never working against him. It is never him, and me, it is we. Yes, I hear it coming , Co-dependency, Self -sufficiancy , and all of that good stuff. When did it become bad to take care of each other, be compassionate and respectful of each other, and admit that we need each other? There is not one thing about our marriage that is demeaning or about unequality. We each do what we are best at and acknowledge the best qualities in each other. Is someone who is good with French better than some who is fluent in Spanish? No,Equal ,but different. I don't feel demeaned by my marriage, you cannot imagine how loved I feel to know my husband is willing to work hard so I can home educate our children and so I don't have to deal with the daily strife.. As for nagging, it is honestly not a part of my marriage, I respect my Husband too much to ever insult him by treating him like a child. I have a husband who is respected at his job and daily praises me to his co-workers, who unfortunately have many complaints about their wives. He is always so proud to introduce his family and his wife. How is that kind of thing demeaning? I also handle financial management in our home, thus I mentioned the budgeting. We have been married for eleven years and have six children(5 sons and 1 daughter) , I cannot begin to describe what a blessing the Lord has given us! God Bless! I certainly never meant to imply that my husband isn't active in parenting. I am sorry if I wasn't clear. He is an extremely dedicated husband and father. Everything he does is for his family. Our children are not chores to be tackled but people to be cared for, eduacationally, spiritually, and emotionally. I am privilidged to be responsible for them when he is not home to share in the fun! I, actually ,am quite happy. I only asked because I simply don't understand the unhappy marriages I see around me. I am perplexed to hear people say(which I hear frequently) that they don't need their husband or wife. How must this make a man or woman feel? I would hate to be told that I am dispensable. It's truly a matter of sadness as I look on and see all of these people who are " of no value". I think men are particularly vulnerable to the , how can I put this delicately, immasculization , of todays society. I hear friends cry out that they don't need a man in the same breath that they use to say there is no good man left. I have 5 sons and I want them to experience the respect my husband recieves. ( I want my daughter to recieve the feeling of being cherished.)I think women need to give the man back what is rightfully his and recieve what is rightfully hers. There is nothing more valuable than a good woman or a strong man. That is what compells my question.
How Do You Feel About Chivalry? I'm all for chivalry. I think it's a nice gesture, as a guy, to open a door/car door, walk on the side of the road where traffic is, let a lady walk first if you're exiting an elevator, etc. I was walking to a class today and overheard a girl on her phone say something like, "She wants a guy who opens the door for her, and I just thought that was stupid!" This got me thinking, do girls really like chivalry? And I know the typical answer is yes, of course, but do you really like it? I'm all for equality between men and women, but I do feel like the gesture of being polite is a good one. Is it an antiquated notion?
Hotels refusing to take cash as payment is it widespread? I've noticed that several of the "better" hotel chains like Amerisuites don't accept cash anymore. Now i checked with the treasury department's website and it said that businesses do NOT have to take cash if they don't want to if they did Sam's Club gas stations and Apple would be in trouble. Is this a widespread thing that anyone else has noticed or is that not the case? I haven't used cash in a long time because i think it's antiquated but curiosity made me ask. I asked a friend of mine who works at a hotel if they did and they said their hotel does to cut down on people throwing parties and to have a way to charge people for damages and stuff like smoking in a nonsmoking room.
I have an idea for how I feel middle and high school should be. Please, tell me what you think.? The other creates the zombies of fear and self-conciousness that are sadly you and I (if you are an adult reading this.) (If you're a kid. Our commitment to you as adults is to MAKE YOU STRONG. Aim at what absorbs your interest." "Teachers are not your only guides though. Look around you. You are surrounded by your young peers, all of them already gifted with numerous perceptions and experiences. A treasure of ideas and knowledge and friendship. As you seek out that knowledge which intrigues you, share your excitement with your young peers. When you have a project, talk about it with your fellow students. The endeavors of your youth will create bonds that will endure into your adulthood. Excited? Please do be excited. Truly I tell you, this is a very exciting time and I am very excited for all of you. This is a wonderful time for you. Explore. Learn. Grow. We adults are eager to see you all find your path. Make yourself strong. Make yourself proud." "All students will now accompany their designated teachers to take a tour of the school and familiarize yourselves with the facilities. <<<Replies>>> Thanks for your comments everyone! I will now respond to all of them. <<<Jeremy W>>> Blog? Is it possible to get people of varying backgrounds and experiences to read about an idea with a blog? I think Yahoo Answers is an excellent service for gaining a wide variety of opinions about ideas. I think Yahoo Answers is dedicated to improving humanity. I agree that my question was long, but it was still a question which requested the responses of my fellow human beings. / Money? Phaw! I can't wait for humanity to evolve beyond that primitive tool of regulating the use of resources. The real tool for regulating resources successfully is school. Good schooling. Not dictator-schooling like we have now (Stalin would have been so proud). Money is something our descendants will look back at and say, "How quaint. Well, that was before people understood the basic truth that when you have a society of have's and have not's a society is depriving itself of unimaginable talent and ability, never cultivated because the majority of the population are wage slaves. Fascinating. It sure took our species a long while to get to this truth. Well now, let's do some reading about how humanity used the resources of most of the species to determine how to surpass the speed of light." / Have to dream big my friend. Only way to live. / Btw my friend, AWESOME BODY! I'm totally jealous. Wouldn't it be great to be able to go to a school where you could dedicate 6 months of the 5 years you had to look forward to of schooling to building up your body. Why not? You finish school with a beautiful body and tons of other projects that YOU have picked. It's all about : The Freedom to Choose. COMPLETE freedom. We got to believe in the kids man. <<<JB>>> Hooray! Approval! Validation of my continued worthiness to exist! Thank You. / It was long, and, I agree with you, I think it was worthy to read too. : ) If school had been like what I propose...I can't imagine how powerful and confident and happy a person I would be...how sad that it's beyond my reckoning, so mired in disillusion and wage servitude am I. / Well. I wasn't born with someone like me having fixed the school system but the next generation will benefit from it. They can count on that. / Y'know. It's vital that everyone feel they have tremendous purpose in life. That their existence is cosmic in its importance. I believe the whole of the Universe can be contained in a single human mind. Impossible? I love that response personally. Why? It's been proven ludicrous SO many times it's quite funny. : D <<<Pizz...fascinating symbols>>> Don't write so much? Why? Forgive me but to develop my idea to the degree I was satisfied with I could not write less. My apologies. / Friends? Parents? Yup and Yup. I totally agree with you. We are all family after all. Africa. Cradle of Humanity. Confirmed by Genetic investigation. I always knew as much inside anyways. / Robot? Yup. Poor teachers huh? What an ordeal to have to get up and teach when you don't want to. Not fair for students and not fair for teachers. This whole, "Work or Die" thing our society has going on has to change. If people do what they love, they WILL work hard. It's so basic. Why do we keep being forced to do stuff we don't want just to live. It SUCKS! more on that some other time. <<<The Ry-Guy>>> Ah. Someone who invested time and thought into cultivating a detailed response. Excellent. My thanks. Let's get to it. / "Public education exists for the public." Yes. And the public is made up of individuals. Confident individuals, make eager and engaging group members. So many of us are living zombies, surviving on caffeine, booze, prime time tv and drugs. Simply put, this wouldn't be the case if confidence was instilled in children while they are in school. Just because education is public doesn't mean it has to suck. / 1. "What if students don't want to learn anything?" Ah Ha! The typical adult response. Cynical to the nth degree. sigh. I grew up with it too. Why are we predisposed to negativity? It sucks. : ( Anyways. This kind of approach to school gives the responsibility to the student. No pressure. NO FEAR! The student goes to school and has a whole building FULL of facilities to be used as they see fit, and all they would want to do is play video games? I think not. My friend, kids NEED US ADULTS TO BELIEVE IN THEM. We have got to stop being so faithless. It's PULLING THE KIDS DOWN! For God's sakes. Can't we PUSH THE KIDS UP? If you tell kids, "Kids we built this school for you. You are our future. Make yourself strong. We're behind you 100%. GO FOR IT!" My friend, if I had been told that...I would be a paragon of strength, confidence and love today, instead of the half-numbed and fear-paralyzed zombie I am (and, I think, most adults are). / 2. "Would this system produce adults good at only one thing?" Maybe. Probably not though. The kids would have 5 years (Grades 7-12) to dedicate themselves to anything they could dream of. I was very curious as a child (still am even though I'm as numb as somebody after they've been tasered by the police). I think kids would become proficient in countless areas. I mean 7 hours a day of school. 5 days a week. For 5 years...wooh...The kids coming out of such a school would be light years ahead of any adult we have around today... man... I wish I'd been able to go to my school. sigh. Well. I just got to make it happen for the next generation then. : ) Got to BELIEVE in the kids man. Got to believe. / 3. "Why does a student have to go to a building?" Oh this is easy. Being with other kids is fun. Humans are gregarious creatures. Social creatures. We need each other. I repeat : WE NEED EACH OTHER. My food. My clothes. My home. All made by others. Not me. Scaffolding I help put up for others to use is my job. Others rely on me. I rely on others. Its essential to the human condition. Being in school with other kids stimulates. There's challenge. There's friendship. There's rivalry. There's romance. It's the stuff of life. Being at home is boring. / 4. "Disabilities?" This school would ROCK! You see, children are naturally good. Especially since they haven't been saturated by the CYNICISM of us adults who are embittered at having been forced to do everything in our sad lives. Forced to go to school. Forced to go to work. Forced to wear a fake smile. Forced to say, "I'm fine, how are you." Forced. Forced. Forced. It gets very wearying doesn't it? : ' ( Kids with disabilities would find themselves in a school with HAPPY kids, and happy kids are kind kids, kind and helpful and generous. Disabled kids would find themselves in an atmosphere of energy and life and love. What better medicine for them. And hey. I bet there'd be more than 1 kid who'd say, "Hey. I got unlimited free time. I'm going to see if I can't figure out why my buddy Jonathan has down syndrome. I'm going to the computer lab first, then to the chemistry lab, then to the gym...yeagh...and I'll get Jesse and Marc and Angela to give me a hand...I'd better go draw up a plan." sniff. Man. What a school this is gonna be...I can't wait. = D / 5. "Graduate?" Grade 12. Same as always. / "90% passion. 10% practicality." Yahoo!!! Edison said it perfectly. "Genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration." Nice. My idea's got a whole 10%! Wicked! Thanks. / "Hard work. Failure." How you look at things my friend. One man's stumbling block is another man's stepping stone. / "Succeed?" Well of course. : ) The need to change the world is impregnated into my bones. I'd have to die to change. "A failure" Maybe. I don't think so though. I think this idea is rock solid and already has a real world example of success. Does anybody here Google? Ta-dah. Freedom works. Freedom and Faith in each other. We got to believe in each other. With that, we are unlimited. Kids especially. Anybody remember Monsters Inc. Children's fear is nothing compared to Children's joy. It's time to put the joy into school for the 1st time in history. I'm going to make it happen. Believe It! / Well my friend. I thoroughly enjoyed responding to your post. YOU ROCK! I think you believe in me too. Even just a little. Thanks for that. : ) Ah. You are a teacher. My empathy. Being a teacher in our system now would have made me cynical too. Kids counting on you to teach, and you powerless to actually do it. Painful to say the least. Don't worry. I'm going to fix it. / I'd LOVE to have you participate in the group I've started in Yahoo Groups about this idea. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheVeljaApproach. Your input would be invaluable. Thanks. <<<Earwax of Satan>>> First. I love the name. That's funny. / "Identifying my passion." My passion is to change the world into one where I delight in living in it, where I jump out of bed in the morning before my alarm clock because I am so PUMPED about what the day has in strore. And I want that for everyone. I want to be surrounded by happy, joyful people. "Rationalize" I hear you. Human beings are : heart, body and mind. A healthy human is one who has all 3 balanced. / "Montessori." You bet. I love those guys. They rule. I'm a bit different though. In my school idea, kids have complete freedom (the school starts at 12 years of age. Coming of age time in indigenous cultures). Kids explore whatsoever they want. Anything. Baking cookies. Quantum mechanics. Automotive mechanics. Knitting. Watching South Park. Shooting jump shots for 6 hours. Anything. "It's freedom baby yeagh!" As I pointed out, our current model teaches ZILCH. Give any adult an old middle school or high school test and they very, very, very likely won't pass. Why should they? All that stuff is just a bunch of data without ties, connections, passion woven into it. WE ARE NOT ROBOTS FOR GOD'S SAKES! We need to bond with our learning. / By the way. You're cool dude. Thanks for the support. / Join my Group! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheVeljaApproach . I'd love your feedback! <<<tehabwa>>> What does tehabwa stand for? "Elementary school is drilling in snippets. Middle school sees student apathetic about learning because they didn't learn in Elementary." Yup. You got it. Pretty lame huh? / I read some of your blog. I'll try to make a point of reading more of it in the future, but, forgive me, but right now I have a lot more to write to answer you and the other kind people who responded to my question. Join my Group discussing this idea, and we can make a point of looking at each other's stuff. : ) / "Deadening rather than Empowering." Yup. Why is that? I have an answer. The short of it is : we aren't allowed to talk about our feelings. They are all choked up inside of us festering away like some pustulating wound we never treat. How can it do aught but make us deathly ill? Deadening to be sure. / "Essential schools." Wicked. I love the idea. Educational? My school idea doesn't label anything as "Educational". Words are just labels. It's feelings that count. It's investing your heart and mind into something, whether it be basket weaving, or nuclear physics. That's education. Otherwise it's up to some bureaucrat to label something as educational and the masses are supposed to be bob their heads up and down like sheep? LAME. / "Reform movement in Math." I looked at the article in Wikipedia and balked. Too long. You know, if you aren't emotionally invested into something it just becomes background noise. If YOU my friend, told me what the movement was about, I'd listen, because you have invested in my idea. I want to invest in you. We only have so much energy and we need to devote it wisely lest we burn out. If the movement involves letting the students guide their own exploration of Math, I'm all for it. If it's more teacher didactiscism, well, I have a really strong visceral reaction against that. School HAS to be focused on the student, and NOT what adults think students need. Don't we see that all of us adults didn't learn DIDDLY SQUAT in the current school system. Come on! It doesn't work! sigh. Why does humanity have to trip over the same stone over and over... sigh... / "Every area has a relatively few most broadly applicable ideas." "Instead of 'giving' students bits of stuff, and micro-skills, they should be getting and constantly applying their minds at the task of understanding or doing something; and incorporating those useful ideas, thus making them part of their intellectual tool-kits." hmmm...Forgive me my friend, but my intitial reaction is that this sounds like more "tweaking" of the system and not "revolutionizing". hmmm...At the moment MY idea has me fired up, but, I want to keep open to everyone's ideas. It's just that I want to give the strength back to the kids. I am just so frustrated to be an adult now, struggling to make ends meet, and having a vision of the awesome potential I could have realized in a school system that was all about me. You see, I think human beings need to explore the world their way. Their own, very unique way. When we feel we are special, then we are receptive to the ideas of others and eager to share points of view, but, we have to feel special ourselves first. That's the condition. That's why school needs to be all about the individual. ALL about the individual. Again, our current system does not work at all. There's no freedom in it, and humans hate slavery. / "Write in the Middle" I love it. But. And here's the but again. Did the kids choose it themselves, or was it more "tweaking". Forgive me, but it sounds like tweaking. I think the idea is great, but, ONLY, if the kids picked it themselves. Otherwise, it's more adults imposing their will on students. I don't like that at all. / "They got so much more out of it than diagramming sentences for no reason whatsoever..." Definitely. Why? Freedom. The more freedom the better. Oh. But freedom with love behind it and belief. Hard when most adults are saturated with anger and biterness over their own schooling, but...we have to dig deep and find the love we didn't get ourselves and give it to this next generation of young people. They need us. That's a purpose. / "Research." Forgive me, but, yuck. More research. More investigation. It's boring. Students learn, human beings learn, when what they're learning is important to them. That's it. No more research needed. Time for action! I'm not the research type anyways. I'm a Sagittarius. All fire. All passion. Tactless oftentimes (sorry). But dedicated to Truth and Justice (Jupiter would be proud, if he wasn't busy seducing nymphs). / "Do not give up on this most worthy goal. I firmly believe our continued existence and our well-being depends on it." I can no more give up on this, then I can give up my heart because that's where this lies. It's a part of me. I've got to change the world. No other way for me to live. My friend, "happy children become happy adults and happy adults shepherd a happy world." Very simple. / "Violation" I don't think so. Yahoo Answers is all about helping human beings. My idea is all about helping. I think the Yahoo guys and gals will be cool with this. <<<Conclusion>>> Whew. A lot of writing on my part. If you skipped most of it, I understand. I probably would have too, but it's just my nature. My heart's in the right place, and that's what counts. If my idea sounds worthy to you and you want to join me in exploring it, please join my Yahoo Group : http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheVeljaApproach/ I think I have an answer for any question you might have, and I'd love to hear them to make my idea more fleshed out. I LOVE thinking about it, so no question would be unwelcome. I have to make school a place kids love going to. It's one of the steps I need to take to change the world into the happy one I know it can become. If you think I'm just a silly dreamer, tell me so. Your opinions are vitally important to me too. You're a fellow human being and I share the world with you. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE REPLIES EVERYONE! YOU ALL ROCK! David.
Morality and due process can exists outside of the Geneva Convention. Why should we limit ourselves...? Why should we limit how the war is fought when it is apparent our foe is using it to their advantage? We ARE fighting with our hands behind our back. We as Americans should hold ourselves to a very high standard. However we should not allow a blatantly abused ANTIQUATED Geneva Convention to continue to allow the enemy an upper hand. Non tradition means and tactics must be utilized to fight a non traditional "war" and enemy. Nowhere have I ever proposed unethical behavior and there is much good to many parts of the Geneva convention. Yes I have had the Geneva Convention shoved down my throat, I have seen first hand not only how the enemy uses it to their advantage but also how severed limbs and crushed chests look while I attempt to stabalize them. I have been there done that as a Medic. We are at a point where soldiers are given rules of engagment then told not to defend themselves until given permission. The real world says that we need new rules to fight a new enemy. Roger, Stand by Okay, here it goes. replace Rules of Engagement everywhere, forget all the rest. I concede that we were clearly brainwashed, threatend, lied to and kept in the dark with this issue. Furthermore, I should have done my homework before spouting off. We are in a war that we cannot win. It is frustrating when you see people die and know that they died not because of war, but because of cowards who hide behind women, and religion. There is no war, it is not a war. It is a complete mess, and good people are dying for a cause that they have bought into through lies and deception.
Social Darwinism? Social Darwinism Social Darwinism is a descriptive term given to a kind of social theory that draws an association between Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, and the sociological relations of humanity. Critics of such theories argue that by asserting that societies develop and therefore operate by "natural" laws, the real aim of "Social Darwinism" theories is to rationalize and thereby legitimize the unequal and disproportionate divisions between and within societies. Critics may make note that Darwin's own work never contained the logical and naturalistic fallacies of assuming that the existence of natural processes meant that that they could "naturally" be extended from biological systems to social systems. "Social Darwinism" is most associated with the writings of Herbert Spencer, although researchers such as David Weinstein have argued that Spencer was not a "coarse Social Darwinist." (http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/spencer/) In Progress: Its Law and Cause (1857) Spencer wrote: "this law of organic progress is the law of all progress. Whether it be in the development of the Earth, in the development of Life upon its surface, the development of Society, of Government, ..., this same evolution of the simple into the complex, through a process of continuous differentiation, holds throughout." Spencer's work also served to renew interest in the work of Thomas Malthus, who is also cited as a Social Darwinist author. Malthus's 1798 work An Essay on the Principle of Population, for example, argued that as increasing population would normally outgrow its food supply, this would result in the starvation of the weakest. Some historians have suggested that the Malthusian theory and similar concepts were used by the British to justify the continued export of agricultural produce from Ireland, even as the Irish were suffering from famine, in particular the Great Famine of 1845-1849. The 1997 book Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond was seen by its author as continuing the debate over Social Darwinism. Diamond formulated a compelling argument that observed differences of technological and social development among populations resulted from environmental factors enhanced by the passage of time. Because Social Darwinism came to be associated in the public mind with racism, imperialism, eugenics, and pseudoscience, such criticisms are sometimes applied (and misapplied) to any other political or scientific theory that resembles social Darwinism. Such criticisms are often leveled, for example, on evolutionary psychology, even though it makes no political or moral claims. Similarly, capitalism, especially laissez-faire capitalism, is sometimes equated with Social Darwinism because it adopts a "sink or swim" attitude toward economic activity. Supporters of capitalism respond that their goal is specifically to avoid ineffective economic behavior, and does not require or condone "letting the weak starve". American Dream The phrase the American Dream came into the American vocabulary starting in 1867 when writer, Horatio Alger came out with his book "Ragged Dick." It was a rags-to-riches tale of a poor orphan boy in New York City who saves his pennies, works hard and eventually becomes rich. It became the model that through honesty, hard work and strong determination, the American Dream was available to anyone willing to make the journey. The American Dream is the concept widely held in the United States of America, that through hard work, courage and determination one can achieve prosperity. These were the values of the original pioneers who crossed the American plains when Europeans first came to America. What the American dream has become is a question under constant discussion. The origin of the American dream stems from the departure in government and economics from the models of the Old World. This allowed unprecedented freedom, especially the possibility of dramatic upward social mobility. Additionally, from the Revolutionary War well into the later half of the nineteenth century, many of America's physical resources were unclaimed and often undiscovered, allowing the possibility of coming across a fortune through relatively little, but lucky investment in land or industry. The development of the Industrial Revolution defined the mineral and land wealth which was there in abundance, contrary to the environmental riches such as huge herds of bison and diversity of forests, for the original American Indians. Many early Americans prospectors headed west of the Rocky Mountains to buy acres of cheap land in hopes of finding deposits of gold. The American dream was a driving factor not only in the Gold Rush of the mid to late 1800s, but also in the waves of immigration throughout that century and the following. Impoverished western Europeans escaping the Irish potato famines in Ireland, the Highland clearances in Scotland and the aftermath of Napoleon in the rest of Europe came to America to escape a poor quality of life at home. They wanted to embrace the promise of financial security and constitutional freedom they had heard existed so widely in the United States. Nearing the twentieth century, major industrialist personalities became the new model of the American Dream, many beginning life in the humblest of conditions but later controlling enormous corporations and fortunes. Perhaps most notable here were the great American capitalists Andrew Carnegie and Nelson Rockefeller. This acquisition of great wealth demonstrated that if you had talent, intelligence, and a willingness to work extremely hard you were guaranteed at least moderate success as a result. The key difference here from the Old World societal structure is that the antiquated monarchies of Western Europe and their post-feudal economies actively oppressed the peasant class. They also required high levels of taxation which crippled development. America, however, was built by people who were consciously free of these constraints. There was a hope for egalitarianism. Martin Luther King invoked the American Dream in what is perhaps his most famous speech: "Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream." (I have a dream) Horatio Alger, Jr. Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 - July 18, 1899) was a 19th-century American author, a leading proponent of Social Darwinism during the Gilded Age (1865-1900), who wrote over 130 dime novels, describing how down-and-out boys were able to achieve the American dream of wealth and success through hard work, courage, determination, and concern for others. Poorly written and repetitive, the novels declined in popularity as Alger's target audience grew more sophisticated. Nevertheless, at the time of their writing they were bestsellers, and Alger's books actually rivaled those of Mark Twain in popularity. As the American dream took shape, Alger gave hope for a brighter future to millions of young men who were then living on the brink of society. Alger was born in Revere, Massachusetts to a stern Unitarian minister who wanted his son to follow him into the clergy. He attended Harvard where he studied under Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with the intention of one day becoming a poet. After graduation he found work as a journalist and schoolteacher. Rejected by the Union Army because of his asthma, he took a tour of Europe where he finally decided to pursue the ministry. He took a position in Cape Cod but left for New York City rather suddenly in 1866, ostensibly to pursue a career in writing. Church records uncovered after Alger's death indicate that he was quietly dismissed for having sexual relations with several boys in his parish. The move to New York was a turning point in Alger's career. He was immediately drawn into the work of impoverished young bootblacks, newspaper boys, and peddlers, and even took a young Chinese immigrant named Sam into his home as a ward (Sam was killed in a carriage accident a few years later). It was this world, coupled with the austere values that Alger received at home, which formed the basis of the first novel in his Ragged Dick series (1867). The book was an immediate success, spurring a vast collection of sequels and similar novels, including Luck and Pluck (1869) and Tattered Tom (1871), all with the same theme: the rise from rags to riches. In fact, the theme became synonymous with Alger. Essentially, all of Alger's novels are the same: a young boy struggles through hard work to escape poverty. Critics, however, are quick to point out that it is not the hard work itself that rescues the boy from his fate, but rather some extraordinary act of bravery or honesty, which brings him into contact with a wealthy elder gentleman, who takes the boy in as a ward. The boy might return a large sum of money that was lost or rescue someone from an overturned carriage, bringing the boyand his plightto the attention of some wealthy individual. It has been suggested that this reflects Alger's own patronizing attitude to the boys he tried to help. Despite his remarkable literary output, Alger never became rich from his writing. He gave most of his money to homeless boys and in some instances was actually conned from his earnings by the boys he tried to help. Nevertheless, by the time he died in 1899, his books could be found in virtually every home and library in America. His books may no longer be as popular today as they once were, but the moral messages they relayed were an important factor in the development of the American dream in the 20th century. At the time of his death, Alger was living with his sister Augusta. She destroyed all of his personal papers, hoping to avoid scandal in the rigid atmosphere of the Victorian Era. Since 1947, the Horatio Alger Association has bestowed an annual award on "outstanding individuals in our society who have succeeded in the face of adversity" and scholarships "to encourage young people to pursue their dreams with determination and perseverance". What would you like to achieve in your lifetime? What steps do you plan to take to accomplish your goals? Do you think the American Dream can be reached − will Americans ever be satisfied with what we have or will we continually desire more? Is this good or bad? Why?
why do white people love the black eyed peas? i know that white people aren't the only ones who like them, but their audience is now largely white america. along with the change in demographic, i've noticed a change in their music. from what used to be a classic group with an unique style and quality lyrics now comes cliched and antiquated lines and "post modern funk" beats (i guess that is what you'd call it) that is pre-packaged for mainstream consumption. i know that i can't really be mad at them for having good business sense, but still, with them and their music on every comercial played today, i think i can say that we've all heard enough from them. i say mainly white people like them because when talking about the group amongst many of my peers, mostly white people were the only ones who like them and everyone else couldn't stand them. your experience may have been different, but for me, that's the way it seems to be what the hell is wrong with some of you people? this is a simple question. i don't care what color you are, just answer the question. it seems that half of you understand that. the other half are going off on their own little tangents, trying to make this into some sort of racial equality question. if you read the question, you'd know what i'm talking about. not really, blackpole sux. they played them on BET too, but black people aren't really into them that much anymore didn't i say that i've talked to many of my peers about them when they come up in casual conversation in my original addition details already, nrsebone? that's where i've made my observations. learn to read
Perception change? I thought I would ask the outside horse world. From a Saddlebred Forum: Marketing question? -How can we change perception of the Saddleseat discipline in the greater equestrian world to grow our ADULT market? IMHO, Saddleseat is seen and talked about as an INCORRECT, BACKWARD, in fact DAMAGING way to ride and train by other disciplines. I am NOT referencing tail sets, shoeing, or training devices in this discussion, simply the equitation style and desired body and neck carriage; the overall Saddleseat goal and look for ALL breeds ridden this way. This nasty tar and feathering of the Saddleseat discipline helps kill our adult market as ‘any right thinking horseman would never subscribe to, defend or encourage this antiquated type of riding’. Since showing is a social issue and most interact with horses to feel good and enjoy some community time, this slamming is tough to stomach. I’ve known more than one juvenile rider who left Saddleseat and migrated to other disciplines when they returned as adult riders simply to avoid the bashiing. Any positive ideas / suggestions, here? Really the TWH industry has kind of ruined Saddle Seat’s reputation. They are the only ones I know of really that as a whole have done any kind of soring but that’s another subject. What about educating people on the things you referred to as “torture” or out dated devices to prove that they have legit reasons and do not hurt but help the show horse.
Has anyone given birth at Piedmont Hospital in ATLANTA, GA?? I am due in September and my doctors are associated with Piedmont Hospital. I am nervous because I don't know anyone who has given birth there and I have yet to take the Hospital tour. I know it is a reputeable hospital, but I'm still concerned. Does anyone have any experience with their Labor and Delivery ward? Is it nice or a little antiquated? Did you find it to be a good experience? Thank you!!!
If I said ""Sweetheart, there is a little fairy in the invisible maple tree growing out of the toilet, "? whom you MUST worship because it loves you more than anyone and will prove it when you die by sending you to Happy Land (or, if you refuse to believe will send you to BADLand for eternity!)...and HERE!- I can prove it to you on pages 401-520 & 772-805 of this here antiquated book of non-fiction, would you believe me? It is, of course , the "true religion", because you know that, because it's the truth, because it says so in a book. Would you teach this to your child. Do you think some intellectual scrutiny might be called for here. What if the majority of others have believed for CENTURIES in the toilet tree fairy? Would that make a difference in your mind? How would feel about the toilet tree fairy giving you the "free will" to make a choice in this life - believe in it and live in peace eternally, or don't believe and be tortured forever? Simple. A. Believe and you're all good. B. Don't believe and you're goin' through the corrugated irrigation pipe and into the sewers of Hell! LOL, TTC! Ah, well, I left out a few bits here and there. *Shuffles embarrassedly* *Hugs TTC and mumbles something about love & cookies into her shoulder* Furiousblue, my sweetheart. *Smiles happily, blood from severed arm dripping lightly from lips* You can use the loo upstairs. That one's a false prophet!
Got an old Allis Chalmers 303 baler for sale? I live in south central Illinois and need the PTO driveline for an old Allis Chalmers 303 baler. It's a 3 point driveline and the carrier bearing assembly is what I really need but would like to buy the whole driveline shaft assembly if it is in good condition or maybe buy the entire baler for parts. I know how antiquated the 303 is so please don't tell me to buy a modern age baler because I just don't have access to enough acreage to make that expense worthwhile. Although, because used parts for the 443 are still fairly easy to find, I would consider buying the slightly less antiquated 443 if it is in real good condition and reasonably priced. Wee-steff, I posted that here because a lot of horse farm and boarding barn owners cut and bale their own hay and some have old equipment they no longer use. In networking my search online, at sites like usedfarmequipment.net for example, I thought this might also be a good place to search as well since I expect there could be thousands of horse owners here. Ayla, thanks for the tip. I will look at that category.
IS THERE tolerance in ISLAM ??????? dear l rob i try 2 conect u but u didn`t allow we r not mohammadizm we r muslim there r misunderstod abt islam, u really have a bad idea abt islam& this translation of quraan is not true here is the true quraan plz check it out www.sultan.org thank u 4 ur answer
do you have any endurance ? I am not a Muslim.because I speak with holy spirit. your religion is good but Islam is the best. Islam differs from what Iranians say in Islamic republic of Iran or other countries. Islam has antiquated.your prophet has confirmed Mohammed ( The Islam prophet )
what is better than religion to have order in this world? is religion antiquated, outmoded, obsolete? This is the modern age, knowledge is attainable at a press of buttons. But why hasn't man been successful in the social norms and man made laws he devised, developed and corrupted for his own ultimate goals? Society without religion is more chaotic than those who have religious practices. Wars? Even without religion, man has been in conflict against each other, preferring to promote his own man made laws. If there is no standardization, there will be always chaos. The non religion practicing heads of clans, tribes, societies wage war, then they manipulate religious groups to fight for them then call it a religious war.How ironic? Even if a religion is not perfect, it still have a beneficial effect to mankind. A firm law and guidance that don't change for reasons man wish to alter for his indulgence. As one saying goes,"Even if there is no God, man have to invent one."
28 yo guy and girl, parents an issue, long distance? Super conservative mom saw picture of my gf and doesn't like her, based on only that, and she wants me to date around and meet people that SHE thinks are good for me. Me and my gf don't get into relationships often (she's never dated anyone, and I haven't dated anyone for years), so this is not just something to be written off, and I know that certain things are special about her that I won't find in most girls. My mom's criteria are also antiquated, i.e. family bkgrnd, wealth. Things I'll never prioritize. I want to struggle through it, but my gf feels like it might lead to antagonism across all of life, especially for her. No matter how good our relationship is (and I think it's really something special), to her there's nothing worth that life of pain. Also, we're long-distance and don't see each other often, but we talk almost everyday, and between me and her, it's great. But because of the barriers, we both sort of stop ourselves from being fully invested. Take a break?
Do you believe ONE voice cannot change things? Think again, I want to share a victory with you ! THIS is progress, one small step at a time. Score one for us ! I objected tp the The www.answers.com website using the word "Retarded". The first reply I received was kind of nasty, so I wrote to a supervisor there saying I am contacting your advertisers, this word is antiquated and insulting, and almost never used except in the USA these days and its time you came on board. Dear Denise, Good news, we have heard back from our premium content partner and they have decided to make the change. They agreed with you, despite being an American based publisher. The term mental retardation has been removed and now reads Down’s syndrome. Thanks again for your input. If we can be of any further assistance, please feel free to contact us. Don’t forget to tell your friends and colleagues about us. WAHOO !!! ONE voice people, make yours heard too everytime you see an injustice or a word being used that is insulting to disabled. It was an article on Downs Syndrome FYI Fae ONLY in the US is the word retarded accepted by the medical community and by society. Everywhere else in the world it is considered offensive, I consider it offensive. IF you arent mentally challenged and it doesnt offend you because no one calls you a retard thats your privilege. Just DONT use it anywhere else. It offends me and most people. At one time the "n" word was common in the US too, it was eradicated for the most part. Clearly the advertisers agreed with me that it WAS offensive too. Enough said in my opinion, thank God for some enlightened people in this world.
Ladies only... what do you think about serenades? Ok, so I want to serenade this girl that means a lot to me... so judging by today's standards will that be considered corny and antiquated? What would you think of a guy, that even if he is not your b/f he still means the world to you, serenading you? The follow up to that question would be that I don't know how to sing all that well... so what will it be better for me to serenade her myself or just hire somebody to do it for me? Cause I was thinking of having two of my friends on the guitars and me on the acoustics and giving it my best on vocals... how does that sound? Thanks for your advise Sorry about that... "advice"... thanks! By means of this I am thanking each one of ladies that have answered my question so far and the ones that are yet to answer. No... there is still romance left in this world... "VIVE LE ROMANCE"
Hitting Your Dog - ARGH!!? I've taught obedience for 30+ years. I now have students of students who are teaching obedience. I teach tracking. I have taught protection work with dogs through Schutzhund. I cannot think of a situation where hitting a dog will accomplish ANYTHING. The two main objections to this antiquated and cruel idea is that 1) you can hurt your dog and 2) you are going to make your dog hand shy or fearful of you. At worse you can create a situation where you now have got a fear bitter. I've worked with these types of dogs trying to get them to trust humans again. Believe me it isn't easy nor is it fun. It is dangerous because you're always concerned, as the trainer, if you are going to get bit. If you learned to "train" a dog this way, you're wrong. Period. You need to get into the 21st century. There are a lot of obedience clubs and private trainers who can teach you much better ways to train your dog. Off the soapbox. So I get this as a question. Who is your best source for POSITIVE dog training?
Any Old Testament Laws that apply to your daily life? Ive noticed people here tend to make fun of the more antiquated laws mentioned in the Old Testament specifically lleviticus, so I am asking if ther are any laws in there that you know about that you actually think are good ideas and shoudl be followed. For example, honor your father and mother sounds good to me. i want to make clear I am not trying to proseletyze here or anything i am jsut wondering if there are any paricular passsages that you think are good ideas. It does not have the be from the ten commandments. There is a law that says you should not put a stumbling block in front of a blind person. Taken litterally this makes sense both literally and metaphorically Considering that some of the Laws are impossible to follow because the Temple has been destroyed or because of other logistical facts, I don't think that antiquated is the wrong word.
Should political parties be banned? THIS WOULD SOLVE THE PARTY FUNDING PROBLEM - THEN - WITH TWO VOTES ON THE BALLOT PAPER - ONE FOR YOUR LOCAL M.P. OPEN TO ALL COMERS (WITH RESTRICTIONS) - AND ONE FOR PM OPEN TO ALL COMERS (WITH RESTRICTIONS) - WE COULD VOTE FOR "BOTH PEOPLE ON THEIR PROMISES AND WHETHER THEIR BELIEFS ARE ALIGNED WITH OURS OR NOT- NOT WITH SOME ANTIQUATED POLITICAL MOVEMENT. THE CHOSEN P.M. COULD THEN APPOINT CABINET MEMBERS BASED ON ABILITY AND POLITICAL BELIEFS IN EACH AREA OF POLICY AND NOT BECAUSE OF GENERAL POLITICAL ALIGNMENT. SURELY THIS WOULD GET THE BEST OUT OF INDIVIDUALS WHO STAND FOR OFFICE - EVERY HOUSE OF COMMONS VOTE WOULD BE A FREE VOTE AND THE "WHIP" SYSTEM WOULD DISAPPEAR OVERNIGHT. THIS WOULD ELIMINATE MUCH OF THE "SLEAZE" IN POLITICAL LIFE TOGETHER WITH ANY PROSPECT OF A "HUNG PARLIAMENT" TOGETHER WITH AN END TO THE DEBATE OVER "PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION" AND WOULD RESULT IN A "GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE", NOW AND FOREVER - WORKING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY. IT SEEMS SO SIMPLE!!!!
