Is there a way to remove paint from a piece of old wooden furniture without damaging the stained wood beneath? When I was a child I painted my great grandmothers corner shelf with pink paint (latex I think.) Now that I'm older, I know how terrible it was to paint it. The shelf is solid wood. But, I don't know the type of wood. It was stained with a dark stain before I covered it with paint. Now I would like to try and return it to the original condition if it is possible to do so. I'm hoping that someone can tell me how to remove the paint.

painting furniture...non toxic primer alternative? I have a number of old painted dressers I've picked up at yard sales that need to be re-painted. A long time ago I used a liquid sander/primer that worked wonderfully, but it smelled horrible. I now know that smell means it's toxic and I won't use that again. How can I prep my furniture to be painted, and what kind of paint do I use? Regular wall paint? Thanks so much!
What is a good gentle way to remove old paint / wood stain from a piece of furniture? We bought an antique high chair...not for collecting but for our baby to be. Trouble is it has a very creepy clown on it and some sort of wood stain that is in bad shape. Is there something gentle that will remove both the paint & the stain but not hard the wood? I meant not HARM the wood.
refinishing old furniture? Strip or sand away old finish? My kids are old enough that I can start refinishing the old furniture that family has given us. Is it easier to strip away the old finish or sand it off. All the furniture is stained and not painted. I think some of it is in good enough contition that I can stain it in a different color. Do I strip it? If so what do you recommend that is not toxic to pets or kids. Or do I sand it, if so what grit to start with? If you need additional info, just let me know and I can add to the question. I have refinished furniture before but it was when I was younger and didn't have kids to worry about.
what kind of black paint to use when wanting to paint pine furniture? Im wanting to paint a pine cabinet black. Not just a dull black, but the new semi-gloss black that the new, but looks old furniture. Ive seen this furniture in alot of different stores, like hobby lobby, craft stores, and furniture stores. Most of the furniture has sanded areas down the sides of the legs and around the corners of a table. Not sure to use just a plain black paint from lowes or do i need a high quality semi-gloss paint from a paint store.
Ceramic tile on old wood furniture? I've got an idea for redoing an pair of old end tables that I've found by painting them a base coat and then tiling the lower level of the table. They are the old 50's style that have a upper short level and a longer lower level. The lower level is just screaming for some nice ceramic tile..but my question is .. Would a rough sanding be enough to rough up the lower level enough for the thin set for the tile to adhere to? Or would I have to perhaps glue down some kind of plastic netting for the thin set?
Do you have to sand down an old piece of furniture that you plan on painting? I want to repaint an old dresser and table , but I dont want to sand it unless I need to...any answers?

I inherited a collection of hand made antique furniture in original paint from my Dad. How should I sell it? My father died in 1997. He was an antique dealer in the Maryland/DC area for years, and upon his death I inherited a collection of antique furniture, mostly 150 - 200 years old, all in the "original painted finish". Most of the furniture is colorful, and it all looks well-used, but from what I'm told, that fact simply makes this type of furntirue more desireable to collectors. I'm currently in the midst of what's going to be an ugly divorce, and I'm having to use all available sources of funds, so it's time to sell Dad's stuff. Any advice on how to go about doing that? What's the best way to proceed? Anybody know any contacts in Mississippi?
What is the best spray paint for furniture? I have a lot of furniture that is hand me downs from my grandmother, I just bought a 117 year old farmhouse, so they look nice, but my taste is more modern botanical, if that makes sense. Something modern, yet earthy. Anyways, I want to paint some of the furniture I have. I like the lines of the stuff, but most of it is really old stained wood (think was in my grandparents basement for 40 years). What is the best spraypaint to use for furniture? Does that Krylon stuff work well? I usually paint furniture with paint and brushes, but this time just want a quick fix until I can afford new furniture. So, any tips on which spraypaint to use and how? Thanks!

How make painted furniture look like wood again? I have a dresser with mirror and two nightstands. Once upon a time, the dresser was a shiny dark wood, and the nightstands were a duller medium wood. They were painted black a few years ago. Can I remove the paint and make them look like wood again, but this time the same wood? The furniture is about 50 years old and still sturdy. I'm not sure if it's solid real wood, or if it has a veneer or anything.
Have you ever made milk paint? I want to use milk paint on my old furniture. If you've made it before, what did you use and did it last?
How do you remove paint of an older piece of furniture? I just inherited an older dresser from my grandmother. I don't know how old it is, but my dad stated that it was painted in this ugly green in the late '40's. I'm assuming it's lead based paint. What is the safest way to remove this paint? I've looked into Ready Strip and Soy Gel as strippers, what are your thoughts on those two products?
How to talk parents into buying you new bedroom furniture??? I REALLY really want new bedroom furniture. What I have isn't cutting it (I mean come on a teenager with flowerery furniture) I want a Full sized bed, our little puppy sleeps on my bed and she isnt to happy about the lack of room either. A tall upright dresser, mine is horizontal and it is just to tempting to dump junk on it, i want a new night stand too. I mean it doesn't have to be expensive but I not going to live with this furniture. We are painting my trim white and my furniture is like a really light FAKE wood with the child like flowers. All I want is white FURNITURE is that to much to ask. So how can I talk my parents into new bedroom (white) furniture and get rid of this 3 year old's junk?????????????? Help school starts again soon and I want my room done before then. Another thing my Mom says that painting over those flowers is not going to happen. But I don't see the problem and the thrift store is a really good idea. I know I sound very greedy but just so you know I have never picked out my own bed in my life! And I have only had three the first one broke so they had to buy me a new one it was one of those loft beds, then we moved and my mom came here by plane and bought the flower set I have now. All I ask is that I get some say in what I get next. not greediness.
What color should I paint my new living room? I have lots of old medium colored wood furniture (antiques). Thx I also want to know what type of carpet to choose. There will be a lot of traffic on it. The antiques will definitely not be painted...thanks for your concern. There are four children ages 9-13 in the house. Although I like red - it might put them all in a bouncing mood. Does anyone know a sight where I can go to try out colors, put in antiques (everywhere seems to show the modern furniture) and try it out? Thanks again for your prompt and helpful answers. How do I restore painted wood furniture? My bedroom furniture is wood, painted black, and the dresser and nightstand have a light cherry stain on the tops. The pieces are fifteen years old, but high quality and in great shape. Everything just needs a little cosmetic work. Do I need to actually refinish the pieces? If not, what can I use to clean the painted surfaces and the stained wood? I'd like to get the furniture to look as new as possible! I have never done anything other than wipe them down with a cloth, and I am definitely a novice at any refinishing (or anything DIY in general). Any answers are much appreciated!
Use of paint on wood furniture...? I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on the type of paint to use on wood furniture? My furniture is somewhat old. I want to touch up the areas which the the black paint has peeled away from the wood without making it obvious that paint was used.
Repainting aluminium garden furniture. Advice required.? Have some old cast aluminium garden furniture, paint peeling off, white powdery 'salts' underneath. Some of the paint scrapes easily and other places seem well stuck. Do I need to remove it all? How shall I treat the 'salts'. With acid? What is the best type of paint to use for repainting. Thanks.

What color should I paint my furniture? We have 2 old dressers that are similar in design, but not in color. I was thinking about painting the 2 of them to match. My bedspread is this pattern is this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20099547 in the blue color scheme. I really love it, and don't want to change it. What would be a good furniture color?
Best way to refinish painted furniture while living in small apartment?!? I have a painted wooden floor cabinet. It desperately needs to be refinished - the white paint is chipping and is very old and dirty. I would love to strip it and repaint it. How do I do simple graffiti designs and words? My daughter saw the movie "Stick It" and now wants to paint some old furniture with graffiti designs. Anyone know how?
How do I re-paint my old furnitures? I'd appreciate it very much if someone could tell me how to re-paint my bookshelves and dresser drawers. Just a simple solid colour is fine for me. I've been searching on-line and all the websites I've skimmed through were too much for me to take in. Step-by-step instructions in all it's simplicity is all I really want. The type of wood I'm working on seems like it's little bits of wood, all recycled, and compressed wood, not cork. The finish is peeling and it's definitely not paint, more like a very fine thin layer of paper that had been glued on (If you put tape on the surface, it would peel off away with it). It can easily be scratched as well. I would really love to paint over it but have no clue as to how to go about doing it. Please HELP! Thanks a lot! By the way...The furniture is not that old there are not a lot of chips or cracks in the wood itself, just the outer surface has been peeled away. Painting it won't be a problem, it's just the processess is what I need to understand. =)
Painting wicker furniture advice is needed...? We have natural looking wicker furniture that we want to paint black. Need advice. Do we need to prime it first? Should we use oil or latex based? Should we use any kind of cleaner/varnish remover b-4 we paint? My husband seems to think we need to first use a remover to get old varnish off but it's so weathered that I know that it will be easy to paint, and he thinks we need oil based paint. I am trying to explain to him that oil based is a nightmare and that we really don't even need to prime since it's natural and we are taking it to black. I'm surprised of his lack of knowledge about painting b/c the REASON for priming is to make sure that your have true color. Painting over red with primer enables a "clean slate" per sey, but paintin gover natural with black is sort of like a clean slate. Anyway, this is turnign into a nighmare. I almost just want to sell the wicker furniture on ebay and buy NEW. This project could end up costing us our marrige (ha-ha). Help
Help! Refinishing furniture and I think that I destroyed it...? I'm a moron. Now that that's out of the way: I was refinishing old furniture and used a minwax water-based stain. The first coat was barely there, so I did a second coat, which I know now was probably too heavy. At first it looked fine, but it eventually dried to a hideous dark brown, opaque, 70's brown color that left no trace of the grain. This took weeks of stripping and sanding - if I have to start over, these are going to goodwill before I make a bonfire out of them. Does anyone know how to dilute/dissolve/remove water based stain? What I've tried so far (on smaller areas, undersides, etc): 1. Bleach 2. Ammonia 3. Mineral spirits 4. Paint stripper 5. Shellac/varnish stripper 6. Oxy 7. Grapefruit juice 8. Vinegar 9. Water 10. Liquid dish soap This stuff will NOT come off or thin at all.Sanding looks even worse, even with a very fine grade. Any advice is welcome. Sorry if this wasn't clear- I'm trying to dilute the top coat- I am NOT sanding it down or stripping it again. The guys at home depot (where I bought it) had no clue- they suggested lacquer thinner or acetone. Neither one did anything.
Paint with 2 month old? Moving into a new home. Wanting to paint/clean before I move furniture in. Is it harmful to my 2 month old baby to have her around while I'm painting?
How do I paint my furniture distressed Americana? I have a small chest of drawers that I want to paint to look distressed and worn in a darker blue color (to go with some old wood star shaped knobs). I can only find instructions for crackle or to distress white (not really what I'm wanting). Any suggestions on how to do this and what kind of paint to use? Thanks!
